Luis Enrique has said that he has not made up his mind over Spain’s ultimate World Cup roster.
Enrique oversaw a late Spain win against Portugal on Tuesday night that saw his side win League A Group 2 and qualify for next year’s Nations League finals.
Even though there are only two months until the World Cup, the manager of Spain is still undecided about his final roster for the event in Qatar, which is contentious for the reasons discussed in this article.
Enrique said: “Training these players is wonderful.
“It’s a pleasure to have so many players of such quality and it’s a shame those who will have to miss out. I don’t have a clear list [for the World Cup]. It will be very difficult for me to decide but that’s why I’m the coach.”
Alvaro Morata’s late goal gave Spain the victory, which was probably fortunate, because Portugal missed several excellent opportunities.
Fernando Santos also thinks that his team needs to draw lessons from the setback.
“It must serve [as a lesson],” he said. “We have to maintain our style of play, regardless of the opponent and we did that for a long time. We had some good moments in the first half, moving the ball well, attacking well. We created several scoring opportunities.
“The team was higher [up the pitch] and then we fell apart. We lost the ability to keep the ball, the players couldn’t control the game and forced Spain to come back. Then they started pushing and pushing. Spain didn’t really have an opportunity, but they scored a goal and won.”
At the World Cup, Spain will play Costa Rica, Germany, and Japan, while Portugal will play Ghana, Uruguay, and South Korea.
